Suspension Looms For Super Eagles Players In World Cup Race
By Benjamin Abioye
Eight key players of the Nigerian national team could find themselves unavailable for the upcoming clash with Benin Republic if they are booked again in their next qualifier against Lesotho.
The players under threat of suspension are Semi Ajayi, Calvin Bassey, Alex Iwobi, Wilfred Ndidi, Tolu Arokodare, Stanley Nwabali, Ademola Lookman, and Bruno Onyemaechi. Each of them has already collected a yellow card earlier in the qualification series.
Nigeria, three-time winners of the Africa Cup of Nations, are still fighting to keep their World Cup hopes alive. Under coach Eric Chelle, they will face Lesotho this Friday in South Africa before taking on Benin Republic four days later in Uyo at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium.
FIFA’s rulebook is clear: once a player picks up two yellow cards across different games, he must automatically miss the following match. That leaves the eight Super Eagles stars just one caution away from being sidelined against Benin.
A few other players, such as Jamilu Collins, Sodiq Ismail, Bright Osayi-Samuel, and Umar Sadiq, are also one yellow card short of suspension. However, they were not named in this round of fixtures, with Osayi-Samuel in particular absent due to injury.
At the moment, Nigeria sit in third place in Group C. Benin Republic lead the pack, while South Africa are in second.
