Breaking: Tinubu Proposes New INEC Chairman
By Gideon Ayeni
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has appointed Professor Joash Ojo Amupitan (SAN) as the new Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), following the exit of Professor Mahmood Yakubu, whose tenure ended in October 2025.
The appointment was announced in a State House press release signed by Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, and was unanimously approved by the National Council of State during its meeting on Thursday.
President Tinubu described Prof. Amupitan as an “apolitical and highly principled scholar”, noting that he is the first person from Kogi State in the North-Central region to be appointed to head the nation’s electoral body.
Council members reportedly endorsed his nomination without objection, with Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo of Kogi State describing the appointee as “a man of integrity whose sense of fairness is unquestionable.”
The President is expected to forward Amupitan’s name to the Senate for confirmation in the coming days.
Prof. Amupitan, aged 58, is a Professor of Law and the current Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) at the University of Jos. He became a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN) in 2014 and has authored several books and scholarly works, particularly in corporate governance and the law of evidence.
If confirmed, Prof. Amupitan will oversee the INEC transition period ahead of the 2027 general elections.
