Jonathan Or Nothing! Northern PDP Group Draws Battle Line
A new northern political force within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has stepped forward for 2027, with the PDP Northern Support Group declaring full backing for former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan as the party’s presidential candidate and pledging total support for Acting National Chairman, Amb. Iliya Umar Damagum.
In a communiqué at the end of its 8th Northern Support Group Meeting held in Birnin Kebbi, Kebbi State, from Wednesday, 8th to Thursday, 9th October 2025, the emerging bloc—comprising delegates from all northern states—said it is poised to rebuild, reconcile and mobilise the PDP back to power in 2027.
Signed by Hon. Yusuf Abubakar (Northern Coordinator) and Hon. Adamu Ahmed Narayi (North-West Zonal Secretary), the statement commended Damagum’s reconciliation drive and urged stakeholders to close ranks, insisting the PDP is “not beyond redemption” and can reclaim the Presidency and more states with unity and discipline.
Positioning Jonathan as the party’s rallying figure, the northern group urged immediate nationwide mobilisation to secure his emergence, describing him as a symbol of peace, unity and progress who prioritised national stability by ceding power peacefully in 2015. It dismissed questions about his eligibility as “settled”, warning rivals not to recycle the issue as a distraction.
The communiqué, however, took aim at internal sabotage, accusing some party elders and elements within the NWC of double loyalty and collaboration with the APC-led Federal Government under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. It singled out Minister Nyesom Wike, alleging divisive actions while serving in the APC government and “recruiting” PDP members to a personal agenda.
Calling for firm disciplinary measures, the group tasked Damagum to enforce party supremacy over individual interests, rebuild grassroots structures across the North, and restore the PDP’s lost glory.
It concluded with a pledge of unflinching loyalty to the party’s collective leadership and a commitment to forging a cohesive, united, and formidable platform capable of winning in 2027.
