Suspense As Trump Announces Israel – Hamas Peace Deal
By GWG Foreign Affairs Editor
Lagos, Oct. 9, 2025 — U.S. President Donald Trump said a deal to end the Israel–Hamas war is “very close,” as negotiators in Sharm el-Sheikh, Egypt push to lock down a multi-stage agreement covering a ceasefire, hostage–prisoner exchanges and a draw-down of Israeli forces in Gaza.
In a post shared from his social accounts late Wednesday, Trump wrote: “I am very proud to announce that Israel and Hamas have both signed off on the first Phase of our Peace Plan.” He said the first phase would address the hostages and open the door to broader de-escalation.
Major outlets, however, reported that while a breakthrough may be imminent, final details were still being hammered out—including Hamas disarmament, timelines for an Israeli troop pullback, and arrangements for post-war governance in Gaza.
Trump’s 20-point plan, unveiled in late September, underpins the talks. As described by U.S. and regional media, it sequences: an immediate ceasefire; hostage-for-prisoner exchanges; Israeli withdrawals to an agreed line; and an internationally backed interim administration for Gaza. Israeli officials have signaled alignment on broad principles, though core issues remain contested.
The talks have drawn a heavyweight cast: Trump’s envoy Steve Witkoff and adviser Jared Kushner, alongside officials from Egypt, Qatar, and Turkey, with Israel represented by senior aides to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
Trump has repeatedly amped up public pressure. Over the weekend he set a soft deadline for Hamas to accept terms and urged Israel to pause bombing to expedite a hostage release—messaging that helped inject urgency but also raised expectations.
