A 29-year-old man, Phillip Nkomo, has been remanded in custody after a heated quarrel over leftover food turned violent at Thokozani Flats in the Mzilikazi suburb of Bulawayo, Zimbabwe.

Nkomo, who appeared before Magistrate Abednico Ndebele, is facing a charge of physical abuse after allegedly assaulting his sister during a domestic argument earlier this month.

According to the prosecutor, Sibusisiwe Sithole, the dispute began when Nkomo demanded food that his sister had set aside for her young son. When she refused, he reportedly lost his temper and attacked her.

“The complainant refused, saying the food was for her son. The accused person became violent and assaulted her indiscriminately,” Sithole told the court.

The assault left the woman with a swollen eye and bruises on her forehead. She was later taken to Mpilo Central Hospital for treatment before filing a police report that led to her brother’s arrest.

Magistrate Ndebele ordered that Nkomo remain in custody pending his next court appearance, as investigations continue.
