Omo-Agege’s Silence Deepens Suspense Over Oborevwori’s Endorsement
Intrigue has enveloped Delta State’s political space following the silence of Senator Ovie Omo-Agege’s camp after Governor Sheriff Oborevwori was endorsed as the sole governorship candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) for the 2027 elections.
At the APC stakeholders’ meeting held at Government House, Asaba, on Sunday, the party unanimously adopted a motion for the endorsement of President Bola Tinubu and Governor Oborevwori as sole candidates for the presidential and governorship elections. The motion was moved by the Minister of Aviation, Festus Keyamo, and seconded by former Speaker Victor Ochei.
While several top politicians — including Senators Ned Nwoko, Ede Dafinone, Joel Onowakpo, former Senators James Manager and Peter Nwaoboshi, and ex-Governor Ifeanyi Okowa — attended, the noticeable absence of Senator Omo-Agege and his loyalists cast a shadow over the unanimous declaration.
Repeated enquiries to Omo-Agege’s camp on whether he supports the endorsement were met with silence, fueling speculation about his next political move. Analysts say the quietude from the former Deputy Senate President, who flew the APC flag in the 2023 governorship election, leaves the state’s political calculus uncertain.
Omo-Agege had before the defection of Governor Oborevwori had crafted the APC in his image with his protegees in control of the party structure, a development that makes the Sunday endorsement of the governor a difficult pill for the camp to swallow.
Meanwhile, Governor Oborevwori expressed appreciation for the endorsement, pledging to continue infrastructural expansion and to align Delta with President Tinubu’s reform agenda.
However, insiders suggest that until Omo-Agege — widely regarded as the most influential APC figure in Delta Central — breaks his silence, the endorsement of Oborevwori may remain politically incomplete, keeping both camps and party faithful guessing about 2027.
