ABUJA — The Presidency on Monday said Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Wale Edun, is recuperating after a brief illness and remains in Abuja, as Central Bank Governor Olayemi Cardoso takes over leadership of Nigeria’s delegation to the IMF–World Bank Annual Meetings in Washington, D.C., opening Monday, 13 October.

Announcing the change, Presidential Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said: “Cardoso, as the alternate Governor, replaces the Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Wale Edun, who is indisposed.”

Responding to swirling rumours that Mr. Edun suffered a stroke or was flown abroad, officials stressed he is being attended to in Abuja and is “recuperating.” Onanuga added on Sunday: “Yes, he’s indisposed… As we are talking, he is in Nigeria. He is recuperating.” The Presidency also said there are no plans to replace him.

Offering a personal update, the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communications, Sunday Dare, wrote on his verified X handle after speaking with the minister: “Moments ago I got off the phone with Nigeria’s Finance Minister… in Abuja. Over a bowl of Amala, we spoke for a few minutes with assurances he was getting better. I wished him the best of health.”

Cardoso will represent Nigeria at this week’s Bretton Woods gatherings as the government pursues reforms to stabilise the naira, curb inflation and spur growth. The Presidency’s notice lists the Minister of State for Finance, Doris Uzoka-Anite, among team members, while the World Bank schedules highlight the Development Committee plenary on 16 October and the IMF’s International Monetary and Financial Committee on 17 October.
