BREAKING: Bayelsa Governor Douye Diri Dumps PDP
By Benjamin Abioye
Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has officially announced his resignation from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
The announcement was made on Wednesday during a meeting held at the executive chamber of the Bayelsa State Government House. However, Governor Diri did not disclose which political party he intends to join next.
His decision to quit the PDP has received strong backing from 23 members of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, including the Speaker, who expressed full support for his move.
Diri’s exit from the PDP comes barely 24 hours after Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, also left the opposition party for the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). The back-to-back defections of two sitting governors signal growing internal shifts and possible cracks within the PDP’s structure.
As of now, Diri has yet to announce his next political direction, but his resignation marks a major turning point in Bayelsa’s political landscape and the South-South region as a whole.
Meanwhile, Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State officially confirmed his defection from the PDP to the APC. Mbah made the announcement on Tuesday during a statewide broadcast, describing his decision as a strategic step to align Enugu State with the federal government for accelerated development.
He explained that his defection was driven by the need to ensure that Enugu benefits from national projects and policies being implemented under President Bola Tinubu’s administration.
Mbah commended the President’s leadership approach and reform efforts, noting that Enugu State had already begun to feel the positive impact of federal support in key sectors.
He assured residents that the move would open more doors for collaboration, investment, and infrastructure development across the state.
The development came shortly after the PDP National Working Committee (NWC) indefinitely postponed its planned National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting scheduled for Wednesday, October 15. The postponement was reportedly linked to the recent wave of defections by party members, including Governor Mbah.
