Tragedy As Popular Grammy-Winning Singer Dies After Cancer Battle
By Gideon Ayeni
The music world has been thrown into mourning following the death of American R&B and soul singer, D’Angelo, who passed away at the age of 51.
According to TMZ, the Grammy-winning singer died after a private battle with pancreatic cancer. The outlet confirmed that his former manager, Kedar Massenberg, along with sources close to the family, announced his passing on Tuesday, October 14, 2025.

Born Michael Eugene Archer on February 11, 1974, in Richmond, Virginia, D’Angelo rose to fame in the mid-1990s with his groundbreaking debut album, Brown Sugar, which redefined modern R&B and earned him global acclaim.
Over the years, he became known for his soulful voice and timeless hits, including Untitled (How Does It Feel), Lady, and Cruisin’. His albums Voodoo and Black Messiah went on to win Grammy Awards, solidifying his place as one of the most influential artistes in neo-soul and contemporary R&B.
Fans and industry colleagues have flooded social media with emotional tributes, describing D’Angelo as a “musical genius” whose sound and message shaped an era.
Earlier in May 2025, the Brown Sugar crooner made headlines after canceling his anticipated performance at the Roots Picnic, citing “an unforeseen medical delay” tied to a previous surgery. A sign, fans now say, of his silent health struggles.
D’Angelo recorded many of his legendary works at Electric Lady Studios in New York City, a creative space he owned and cherished. He also collaborated with some of music’s biggest names, including Lauryn Hill, Jay-Z, and Raphael Saadiq.
His artistry continues to inspire a new generation of stars such as H.E.R., Frank Ocean, Anderson .Paak, Daniel Caesar, and Kendrick Lamar.
