The Labour Party’s internal conflict has taken another turn as the Julius Abure-led faction has threatened legal action against the Interim National Chairman, Senator Nenadi Usman, and two of her aides. The group accused them of constantly attacking the judiciary and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

In a statement issued in Abujaon Thursday, the National Publicity Secretary of the Abure faction, Obiora Ifoh, accused Usman’s camp of assuming powers they do not have. He claimed that their recent press release was meant to “blackmail INEC and the Acting Chairman of INEC for obeying a validly issued court order.”

“The statement was also crafted to embarrass His Lordship, the judge of the High Court, and to bring the court to public opprobrium and ridicule,” Ifoh added.

Senator Usman, through her media aide, had earlier demanded the arrest of Julius Abure and the Acting INEC Chairman, Mrs. May Agbamuche-Mbu, accusing them of conspiring to subvert justice in the ongoing leadership dispute within the party.

Reacting to the allegation, Ifoh dismissed it as “baseless and politically motivated,” emphasizing that the judiciary must not be subjected to unwarranted attacks.

“Ms. Nenadi Usman, through her aide, Asogwa, had called for the arrest of Mrs. Agbamuche-Mbu for, according to them, ‘criminally colluding with Barrister Julius Abure’ to rightfully carry out her job in line with the laws governing the electoral commission,” Ifoh stated.

He further revealed that the Abure faction had instructed its legal team to take action if Usman’s group fails to withdraw the statement. “Consequently, we have instructed our counsel to write Mr. Asogwa, who is also a lawyer, to within the next 72 hours retract the highly offensive and embarrassing statement. Without this, we will be left with no other choice but to petition him to the Nigerian Bar Association for describing a validly issued order of a court as FAKE,” Ifoh warned.

He condemned the comments made by Usman’s camp, describing them as “reckless” and damaging to the image of the judiciary.

“We view his action as an attempt to bring the judiciary to disrepute. This is moreso for a lawyer who is supposed to defend the integrity of the judiciary,” Ifoh said. “He ought to sufficiently know that lawyers argue their matters in court and not on social media. Dragging the integrity of the court in the social space, all because of politics, is very unfortunate.”
