Nigerian Man Stabs Best Friend To Death In Fight Over Woman
Tragedy struck in Ilorin, the Kwara State capital, on Tuesday evening after a young man allegedly stabbed his best friend to death during a heated argument reportedly over a woman.
The deceased, identified as Hammed Usman Tunde, 25, was said to have been attacked by his close friend, Gafar, aged 21, in the Oja Gboro area after tempers flared while both men were patronising a sugarcane vendor.
According to eyewitness accounts, what started as friendly teasing about a girl both men were reportedly interested in soon degenerated into a full-blown quarrel. In the heat of the altercation, Gafar allegedly pulled out a knife and stabbed his friend, Tunde in the chest.
“The argument was about a girlfriend they were both interested in,” an eyewitness who pleaded anonymity told PUNCH Metro. “Before we knew it, Gafar brought out a knife and stabbed his friend.”
Tunde, a resident of Ile-Soro 2 in Oja Gboro, was rushed to a nearby private hospital but was later referred to the General Hospital, Ilorin, where doctors confirmed him dead on arrival.
The suspect, a native of Ile Olowo in the same area, reportedly fled the scene immediately after committing the act. As of Thursday, both he and his family members had disappeared from their home.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson for the Kwara State Police Command, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, said the command received a distress call around 2:30 a.m. on Wednesday and immediately dispatched operatives to the scene.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the deceased, Hammed Usman Tunde, was stabbed by his friend, Gafar, who fled immediately after the incident. Operatives later visited the suspect’s family house, but the entire household had absconded,” she said.
The Commissioner of Police, CP Adekimi Ojo, has ordered a discreet investigation and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to track down the fleeing suspect, urging residents to remain calm and avoid taking the law into their own hands.
