A viral video has gone viral online after showing a Nigerian secondary school student being forced to smash his mobile phone with a hammer in front of the entire school assembly.

The incident, which surfaced on X (formerly Twitter) on Thursday, October 23, 2025, has divided opinions across social media. While some netizens applauded the school’s strict enforcement of its “no-phone” policy, others described the act as cruel, humiliating, and inconsiderate especially for students from struggling families.

In the video, the visibly distraught student is seen on the assembly ground as he’s handed a hammer by school authorities and ordered to destroy his smartphone. His schoolmates watched in disbelief as the boy reluctantly obeyed, smashing the phone to pieces amid gasps and murmurs from the crowd.

Still, a section of commenters defended the school, saying the measure was necessary to curb the growing rate of distractions among students and enforce order.

As of press time, the name and location of the school involved have not been confirmed.
