Tinubu Explains Why He Ordered Shake-Up In Military Leadership

President Bola Tinubu has explained that the recent changes in the leadership of Nigeria’s Armed Forces were made to strengthen the country’s security system.
In a message shared on his 𝕏 account, the President said the decision was part of his administration’s ongoing efforts to improve the nation’s defence structure and enhance coordination within the military.
The statement announcing the changes was issued on Friday, October 24, 2025, by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare.
Tinubu confirmed the appointment of General Olufemi Oluyede as the new Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General W. Shaibu as Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke as Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas as Chief of Naval Staff. He also stated that Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye would continue as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
“I have approved changes in the hierarchy of our Armed Forces to further strengthen Nigeria’s national security architecture,” the President said.
“General Olufemi Oluyede is appointed Chief of Defence Staff, Major-General W. Shaibu becomes Chief of Army Staff, Air Vice Marshal S.K. Aneke is Chief of Air Staff, and Rear Admiral I. Abbas is the new Chief of Naval Staff, while Major-General E.A.P. Undiendeye retains his role as Chief of Defence Intelligence.
“I thank General Christopher Musa and the outgoing Service Chiefs for their selfless service and dedicated leadership, and I charge the new Service Chiefs to deepen professionalism, vigilance, and unity within our Armed Forces as they serve our nation with honour,” he added.
The President also expressed appreciation to the outgoing Service Chiefs, led by General Christopher Musa, who served as Chief of Defence Staff since 2023. He commended their years of service and commitment to the nation’s peace and stability.
Tinubu urged the newly appointed military heads to uphold professionalism, remain disciplined, and work as a united force in protecting the country and its people.
