Sunderland produced a stunning late upset at Stamford Bridge, defeating Chelsea 2–1 in a Premier League thriller settled deep into stoppage time.

The home side had dominated for much of the match, but failed to turn possession into goals, leaving the door open for the visitors to snatch a famous victory.

Chelsea make bright start but lose control

Chelsea began confidently, taking the lead in the fourth minute when Alejandro Garnacho finished neatly from a Pedro Neto assist. The early goal appeared to settle the home side, who enjoyed close to 70% possession throughout the first half.

However, Sunderland grew into the game and equalised midway through the opening period. Wilson Isidor tapped home from close range after a deflected effort, leaving Robert Sánchez helpless. The visitors’ spirited response unsettled Chelsea, who struggled to convert their territorial dominance into clear chances.

Missed chances prove costly

The hosts continued to press after the break, with Enzo Fernández and Moises Caicedo both testing goalkeeper Robin Roefs, who delivered a standout performance to keep his side level. Despite wave after wave of Chelsea pressure, Sunderland’s defence held firm, with Daniel Ballard and Nordi Mukiele making crucial blocks.

Chelsea looked the likelier to score as the match entered added time, but a lapse in concentration cost them dearly.

Talbi’s stoppage-time strike seals shock win

In the 93rd minute, Sunderland launched a swift counterattack led by Brian Brobbey, who set up Chemsdine Talbi to fire home the decisive goal. The late strike silenced Stamford Bridge and sent the visiting supporters into raptures.

Chelsea pushed for an equaliser in the final minutes, but Sunderland’s defence—anchored by Reinildo—held out to secure all three points.

Reaction and what’s next

The result marks a huge boost for Sunderland, who displayed remarkable resilience to weather sustained pressure and strike when it mattered most. For Chelsea, it was a sobering reminder of their continued struggles to convert dominance into victories.

Chelsea will now turn their attention to next weekend’s trip to Aston Villa, while Sunderland return home buoyed by one of their best away performances of the season.
