Untold Reason Oborevwori Suspended Polytechnic Rector, Bursar
The crisis rocking the Delta State Polytechnic, Ogwashi-Uku, took a dramatic turn this week after the institution’s Governing Council formally petitioned the state government over what it described as alleged acts of administrative and financial indiscretion by the Rector and the Bursar.
Following the petition, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, in his capacity as Visitor to the Polytechnic, approved the immediate suspension of the two principal officers for six months to enable a full-scale investigation into the allegations.
In a statement issued on Thursday by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), Dr. Kingsley Eze Emu, the governor also upheld the earlier suspension of the institution’s Registrar, which had been ordered internally by the Polytechnic’s Governing Council.
According to the SSG, the council’s petition outlined concerns bordering on misuse of funds, breach of administrative procedures, and disregard for due process — prompting the state government’s swift intervention.
“The suspension of the principal officers is to allow for a thorough and unbiased investigation into allegations of administrative misconduct and financial breaches levelled against them by the Governing Council,” the statement read.
To ensure continuity in the institution’s management, the government directed that the Deputy Rector should assume duties as Acting Rector, while the most senior accountant in the Bursary Department will serve as Acting Bursar throughout the suspension period.
While the specifics of the alleged infractions were not immediately disclosed, sources within the institution said the petition detailed instances of financial irregularities and unilateral administrative decisions that allegedly contravened the Polytechnic’s regulations.
Observers within the state’s academic community have described the Governing Council’s petition and the government’s prompt response as a reaffirmation of Governor Oborevwori’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and discipline in public administration.
The governor, whose MORE Agenda emphasizes good governance and institutional reform, is expected to receive the findings of the investigative panel at the conclusion of the six-month probe before making a final decision on the fate of the suspended officials.
