NECO Opens First Exam Centre In UK For Nigerians Abroad
By Benjamin Abioye
The National Examinations Council (NECO) has opened its first examination centre in the United Kingdom, a move designed to make it easier for Nigerians living abroad to obtain certified secondary school qualifications.
The new centre, located in London, was officially launched during the Education Matters Conference UK 2025. NECO’s Registrar and Chief Executive, Professor Dantani Ibrahim Wushishi, explained that the project was developed in partnership with Barnfield Education Ltd.
He said the initiative supports the Federal Government’s goal of promoting inclusive education and strengthening global engagement. “The initiative aims to provide opportunities for Nigerian students and adult learners in the UK who, for various reasons, have been unable to complete secondary education or obtain equivalent qualifications,” Wushishi said in a statement.
Wushishi described the London SSCE centre as an important step toward expanding NECO’s international presence. He noted that the Council already conducts exams in seven countries, including Saudi Arabia, and plans to open more centres in Egypt and Burkina Faso.
He added that the London centre will “empower Nigerians abroad, foster national pride, and enhance the global recognition of NECO certificates.” According to him, NECO qualifications are already accepted by several universities in the UK such as Birmingham City University and Leeds Trinity University, as well as institutions in the United States, Canada, India, China, and Russia.
Nigeria’s Minister of Education, Dr Tunji Alausa, praised NECO for the development, calling it “a vital step in ensuring that no Nigerian child, at home or abroad, is left behind.” He added that the initiative supports the government’s goal of using the diaspora as a key educational partner.
During a visit to the Nigerian High Commission in London, Professor Wushishi briefed officials about the new centre’s establishment and accreditation. Ambassador Eche Abu-Obe, Head of Political Affairs at the Mission, described the move as a “timely and commendable effort” that aligns with Nigeria’s policy of educational inclusivity and engagement with its citizens overseas.
