The Federal Government of Nigeria has announced plans to introduce stricter regulations on TikTok and other social media platforms, saying the goal is to encourage more skill-based and educational content rather than the entertainment-focused trend that currently dominates the space.

Nigeria government officials disclosed that the move to regulate Tiktok is part of a broader effort to channel young Nigerians’ creativity into more productive digital engagement, especially in areas that can enhance skills and career development.

However, the announcement has triggered different reactions across social media, with many Nigerians accusing the government of misplaced priorities at a time when the country is grappling with economic hardship and unemployment.

Some creators also expressed concern that the proposed policy could restrict creative freedom and force them to alter their content to remain compliant.

While many condemned the planned regulation as unnecessary interference, a few Nigerians welcomed it, arguing that social media platforms have become overrun with unproductive content.

Meanwhile, the government has yet to provide details on how the regulation will be implemented or when it will take effect.
