Courts across Kaduna State were closed on Monday as members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) commenced an indefinite strike to demand full financial autonomy and other outstanding entitlements.

All levels of courts, including the Federal and State High Courts, Upper Shari’a Courts, Customary Courts, and Magistrates’ Courts, were locked, with banners at their gates reading, “JUSUN Kaduna State Chapter Embarks on Strike.” At the Shari’a Court in Magajin Gari, the premises were also deserted, though a few court staff were seen outside assisting people in need of affidavits.

The union had earlier issued a strike notice on October 23, signed by its secretary, Nasiru Haruna. According to the statement, the action became necessary after the Kaduna State Government failed to respond to several letters and reminders, including one dated September 1 and an ultimatum issued on October 9, 2025.

JUSUN explained that it had made several attempts to reach a peaceful agreement with the government but received no response. “An indefinite strike action shall begin on Monday. All activities of the Kaduna State judiciary shall be shut down. All staff are to withdraw their services until further notice,” the statement read in part.

The union’s demands include the enforcement of financial autonomy for the judiciary as provided by the 1999 Constitution (as amended), salary adjustments, and payment of withheld wages for April and May 2021.

Other requests include payment of nine years’ arrears of a 20 percent salary component from 2016 to date, settlement of accumulated leave and transport grants covering nine years, and the release of outfit allowances for judicial workers.

JUSUN stated that the decision to embark on the strike was reached during an emergency meeting held on October 13 and has directed all courts and judicial departments across Kaduna State to comply fully with the industrial action until further notice.
