Nigerian journalist and publisher, Dele Momodu, has warned President Bola Tinubu’s administration against believing that keeping Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), in detention will bring unity to the country.

Momodu, in a post shared on his X handle on Tuesday, reflected on Kanu’s prolonged detention, saying the Biafra agitation is rooted in deep historical and political issues that go far beyond one man.

According to him, the government’s approach of silencing dissenting voices would only worsen discontent in the South-East rather than foster national unity.

“The agitation for Biafra did not begin with Nnamdi Kanu,” Momodu noted, stressing that decades of marginalisation and deprivation have continued to fuel frustration among Igbo youths.

He explained that the Biafra movement grew out of long-standing injustices, economic imbalance, and a lack of inclusion that have persisted since the end of the civil war in the 1970s.

Momodu also referenced one of Kanu’s past broadcasts, which he said reflected the intellectual and emotional foundation of the agitation. He criticised those who condemn Kanu without examining the history and experiences that shaped his ideology.

“The scars of the civil war remain visible,” Momodu wrote. “The continued neglect of the South-East only deepens old wounds that fuel the call for self-determination.”

He insisted that what Nigeria needs now is not repression but political restructuring, inclusion, and equity. He warned that attempts to silence or eliminate Kanu would further complicate Nigeria’s unity challenge.

According to him, genuine leadership requires engaging the best minds from every region and creating opportunities for them to contribute meaningfully to national development.

“I will never support violence,” Momodu clarified. “But any sensible government will keep the geniuses of the South-East busy with productive engagements instead of hate.”
