WAEC Dismisses False Claims On 2026 WASSCE Subjects
By Benjamin Abioye
The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has dismissed reports claiming that it instructed senior secondary school students to register for specific subjects ahead of the 2026 West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) for school candidates.
In a statement issued by its Acting Head of Public Affairs, Moyosola Adeshina, the Council described the information circulating online as completely false and misleading.
“We wish to categorically distance ourselves from this unfounded assumption and the information making the rounds on the said subject,” Adeshina stated.
WAEC clarified that it has no authority to design or modify school curricula in Nigeria, explaining that such duties belong solely to the Federal Government.
“The introduction or modification of any curriculum in Nigeria is a function of the Federal Government. WAEC operates strictly within the established legal and operational frameworks of its host country,” she explained.
The examination body stressed that its responsibility is to carry out government-approved policies through credible and transparent assessments.
Reassuring candidates and parents, WAEC reiterated its dedication to fairness and professionalism in conducting the 2026 WASSCE.
“All candidates taking part in the 2026 WASSCE for School Candidates will be given a fair and equal opportunity in the assessment process,” the statement read.
The Council advised schools, parents, and the general public to ignore false information and rely only on official updates from WAEC regarding examination procedures.
“Schools, stakeholders, and the general public are advised to disregard the misleading reports and rely solely on official communications from the Council for accurate information regarding examination guidelines for WASSCE (SC) 2026,” Adeshina added.
