In the viral clip, a young woman promoting the store’s products could be seen showcasing various items and their prices. However, what appeared to be a lighthearted commercial quickly turned controversial when the advertiser made a remark that viewers found derogatory.

While displaying sachets of garri and beans, the lady said, “You mean I can get beans and garri Ijebu at Bokku without any Omo Igbo cheating me?” — a statement that immediately triggered widespread outrage online.

Watch the video below;

The comment was widely condemned as a tribal slur that portrayed Igbo traders in a negative light. Many Nigerians on social media accused the brand of promoting ethnic stereotypes and fanning the flames of division in a country already grappling with tribal tensions.

Read some netizens’ reactions below;

@afrisagacity: “So, the
@bokkumart
media team created an Ad labelling Igbos as “cheaters.”

The Ad is clearly a “negativity campaign” experiment, wherein the Bokku team attempted to exploit the surging tribal bigotry trend to draw attention to their godforsaken products, hoping benefit from the negative bias.

In a part of the Ad, the nvmbskull of a girl reciting the gibberish said “Without any Omo Igbo cheating me.”

They chose to slur Igbos to win atttion…!

This is an insult taken too far. While this Ad will surely draw the attention of the public, it has to destr0y the purpose for which the Ad was created.✍️”

@GeneralSnow_ : “Bokku is owned by Adewale Adeyemi.
Until he comes out to apologize for that attack on Igbos, they remain cancelled.
You don’t profile Igbos as cheats and expect patronage from them.
God pun!sh your papa!”

As the backlash grew, calls mounted for Bokku Mart to issue a public apology and take disciplinary action against those behind the video. Some users also urged regulatory authorities to sanction brands that promote tribal or discriminatory content under the guise of marketing.

At the time of filing this report, Bokku Mart had yet to release an official statement addressing the controversy.
