Gumi Reacts To Revocation Of Wole Soyinka’s US Visa
Controversial Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has reacted to the recent revocation of Nobel Laureate Wole Soyinka’s United States visa, describing the move as an attempt to silence outspoken voices.
News broke earlier this week that the US government, under President Donald Trump’s administration, had permanently revoked Soyinka’s visa.
Speaking to journalists on Tuesday at the Kongi’s Harvest Gallery, Freedom Park, Lagos, the literary icon expressed surprise over the development, saying he was unaware of any wrongdoing that could have warranted such an action.
The decision has since generated different reactions from Nigerians, both home and abroad, with many questioning the motive behind the move.
Reacting via his official Facebook page on Wednesday, Sheikh Gumi drew parallels between Soyinka’s experience and his own, recalling how his Saudi visa was once revoked for what he described as “no offence besides freedom of speech.”
“It reminds me of my Saudi visa revoke for no offence beside freedom of speech,” Gumi wrote. “Poor them. You can’t silence those who don’t need you to survive.”
As of press time, the US embassy in Nigeria has yet to release an official statement regarding the revocation of Wole Soyinka’s visa.
