Anambra Governorship Candidate Photos

The African Action Congress (AAC) has strongly condemned what it described as sexist and demeaning remarks targeted at its Anambra governorship candidate, Chioma Ifemeludike, following the circulation of her viral campaign photos.

In a statement released on Wednesday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Femi Adeyeye, the AAC criticized the focus on Chioma’s appearance rather than her political vision and ideas.

“Our candidate, a vibrant and ideologically clear woman, is being judged by her outfit choice and physical features rather than the quality of her ideas,” the statement read.

The party said the backlash against Chioma reflects the deep-rooted patriarchy that continues to plague Nigeria’s political landscape. It noted that women in politics are often subjected to double standards, forced to prove their competence while meeting society’s expectations of what is considered “acceptable femininity.”

“The sexist jokes remain condemned but are not surprising because even the National Assembly, a supposed model of national representation, has become a house of sexist jokes,” AAC added.

The statement further urged Nigerians to focus on ideas, competence, and integrity, not physical appearance. “When we reduce a female candidate to her body or her clothing, we silence her vision and reinforce the message that women’s worth is tied to their physical appearance, not ability,” it read.

Earlier, Chioma Ifemeludike sparked online debates after sharing campaign photos of herself dressed in a black leather gown with spaghetti straps, boldly declaring herself “the best candidate” for the upcoming November 8 governorship election.

While some applauded her confidence and modern approach to politics, others criticized her outfit, calling it inappropriate for a political aspirant.

Responding to her critics, the actress-turned-politician defended her stance, writing:
“Do not let them gaslight or confuse you. Yes, we can have beauty and brains in one body. Ndi Anambra must vote for social change.”

Chioma, who remains the only female candidate in the race, has continued her statewide campaign, focusing on reforms in education, infrastructure, and youth empowerment. A message she says represents the future of inclusive leadership in Anambra State.
