President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has formally handed over Governor Agbu Kefas of Taraba State to the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Nentawe Yilwatda, marking a decisive step toward Kefas’s defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the ruling party.

The development, confirmed during a closed-door meeting between Kefas and APC youth leaders at the T.Y. Danjuma House in Abuja on Thursday, signifies the final phase of the governor’s political realignment.

Governor Kefas, according to participants at the meeting, disclosed that President Tinubu had received and approved his intention to join the APC, before personally handing him over to Chairman Yilwatda for “proper initiation and full integration into the APC family.”

“The President has given me his blessing and has handed me over to our National Chairman, Nentawe Yilwatda, to complete the process of my entry into the APC,” Kefas was quoted as saying.

Comrade Abubakar Gembo, who attended the meeting, told reporters that the move had electrified the party’s base in Taraba.

“Governor Kefas informed us that President Tinubu personally received him and handed him over to the National Chairman. This is no longer speculation — it’s a done deal. His coming will be a massive boost for APC in Taraba,” Gembo said.

Also speaking, Idris Ayuba, chairman of the APC Youth Vanguard in Taraba, said Kefas’s defection had been “perfected at the national level” and was now awaiting formal unveiling in the state.

“The governor has shown that he’s youth-friendly and focused on inclusion. We’re ready to receive him and work with him,” Ayuba stated.

In a statement, the Vanguard’s Publicity Secretary, Rikwense Muri, confirmed that Kefas had met with youth leaders and influencers across APC structures to build a united political front that would “bring Taraba closer to the centre of power.”

“Taraba can no longer afford to stand outside national politics,” the governor reportedly said. “My decision is guided by the need to put Taraba first, to bring development, federal support, and greater security to our people.”

Kefas, elected in 2023 under the PDP, is set to become the first sitting Taraba governor to cross over to the APC since 1999 — a move seen by many as a major political coup for President Tinubu and the ruling party ahead of 2027.
