We Are Sorry – Lagos Supermarket Apologises Over “Omo Igbo” Advert (Video)
By Gideon Ayeni
Nigerian brand influencer, Defolah, has tendered a public apology following massive backlash over a controversial advert she featured in for popular grocery store, Bokku Mart.
The now-deleted video, which first appeared on Bokku’s official social media pages earlier in the week, sparked outrage after Defolah made a statement many described as tribal and offensive.
In the advert, the influencer said she could buy beans and Garri Ijebu at Bokku “without any Omo Igbo cheating me,” a remark that immediately drew sharp criticism from Nigerians who accused both her and the brand of promoting ethnic stereotypes.
Following the heavy criticism, Defolah took to her X page to apologise in a video statement.
“I am deeply sorry for my words,” she said. “I’ve definitely learned from this. My statement came off as tribalist and offensive, though that was never my intention.”
She added that she had personally reached out to Bokku Mart to apologise and urged that everyone involved take responsibility for the incident.

Reacting to the backlash, Bokku Mart also issued a public apology and confirmed that the advert had been taken down from all their platforms.
“We are sorry, very sorry,” the brand said. “An influencer used those words and she’s been cautioned. We’ve taken it down everywhere. We do not condone this at all. If anything, we are very pro-Nigerian in our dealings and will never intentionally hurt any arm of what makes us a beautiful country.”
