Veteran actor Olaiya Igwe has stirred conversations online after expressing regret for declining to lend his car to gospel singer Tope Alabi on her wedding day years ago.

The actor made the revelation during a recent public event held to celebrate the singer’s birthday, noting that the incident has continued to trouble his conscience despite seeking forgiveness.

Igwe, while recalling the episode, explained that the request came shortly after he purchased a new Mercedes V-Boot following the success of his movie, Ololade Mr Money. He said Tope Alabi and her husband, Soji, had approached him ahead of their wedding to use the vehicle, a request he initially agreed to. According to him, fear later set in, and he withdrew the offer.

A video of the moment the actor spoke about the incident during the birthday celebration has resurfaced online, sparking mixed reactions from Nigerians.

Narrating his side, Igwe said:
“What hurt me most and still hurts me is what I did to my younger sister, singer Tope Alabi. She informed me about her wedding, and I had just bought a V-Boot at that time.
“When I returned from Ibadan, Tope Alabi came to my house in Abeokuta and said, ‘big brother, we want to use your car for our wedding’, and I said no problem. But I had a second thought that what if armed robbers snatched the car from them? I didn’t give her the car. I disappointed Tope Alabi.”

He added that although he had apologised, guilt remains:
“She now has countless luxury cars, some of which I cannot afford. Up till today, I still feel bad.”

The actor said he chose to revisit the incident publicly as a lesson to others, saying he once faced heavy criticism for the same story during a past interview.

Reactions have poured in across social media, with users sharing diverse opinions.
