DELSU Rusticates Student For Posting Video Of Dying Colleague
By Benjamin Abioye
Delta State University, Abraka has expelled a 200-level Microbiology student, Ezi Ugoma, for four semesters after a disciplinary panel found her guilty of serious misconduct.
The school said she recorded a fellow student who was dying at the school health centre and posted the video on TikTok.
An official letter dated October 21, 2025, said the decision was approved by the Vice-Chancellor after the committee’s recommendation. The school explained that her action broke the student oath and went against the school’s ethical rules.
The letter read:
“After due consideration of the committee’s report, the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Samuel O. Asagba, has approved the recommendation of the Committee that you be rusticated for four semesters with effect from the 2025/2026 academic session. You are expected to resume studies in the 2027/2028 academic session.”
The school also sent copies of the sanction to her sponsor and other departments for record purposes.
The panel held sittings between August 21 and 25, 2025, and the student was invited to defend herself before the final decision was made.
The punishment has caused a strong reaction online. A well-known media presenter criticised the school and asked the Vice-Chancellor to cancel the punishment.
He wrote on social media describing the two-year suspension as “unjustifiable” and asked for mercy. He also said he sent the video and the school letter to the Vice-Chancellor on Instagram but got no reply.
In another message he said her guardian reacted badly to the punishment and asked her to stop schooling and return home. He pleaded:
“Please, sir, don’t allow this to happen to her. We need your help. Please intervene.”
