U.S. Senator Ted Cruz Applauds Trump’s Position On ‘Killing Of Nigerian Christians’
By Gideon Ayeni
U.S. Senator Ted Cruz (R-Texas) has commended President Donald Trump for designating Nigeria as a “Country of Particular Concern,” following Trump’s viral statement condemning the killing of Christians in the country.
In a statement released on Friday, Cruz said he was “deeply gratified” by Trump’s decision, noting that he had long championed efforts to confront the persecution of Christians in Nigeria.
“I have fought for years to counter the slaughter and persecution of Christians in Nigeria, and this year introduced legislation that will lock in the designation made today,” Cruz stated.
He described the move as a “critical step” toward holding accountable Nigerian officials who, according to him, have allowed an environment where religious violence thrives.
“My legislation implements additional steps, including targeting those who implement blasphemy and sharia laws in Nigeria, and I am committed to working with the administration and my colleagues to advance my bill and implement these necessary measures,” he added.
The Texas lawmaker praised Trump’s “strong leadership,” saying the designation was long overdue and would push for more international pressure to protect religious minorities.

Trump’s earlier statement, which has since gained wide traction online, accused “radical Islamists” of being responsible for mass killings of Christians in Nigeria and urged the U.S. Congress to take immediate action.
Cruz’s backing further amplifies the growing calls in Washington for the U.S. government to take a firmer stance on religious persecution in Nigeria.
