The Zimbabwe Republic Police (ZRP) confirmed the development in a statement released on November 1, 2025.

According to the police spokesperson, Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi, Magaya was picked up during an early morning operation in Harare by a special police unit.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms the arrest of Walter Magaya in connection with several reports of rape and fraud. Further details will be released in due course as investigations progress,” Nyathi said.

The arrest has sent shockwaves across Zimbabwe, given Magaya’s prominence as one of the country’s most influential religious figures. He rose to fame in the early 2010s through his fast-growing ministry, which attracted thousands to his “Night of Turnaround” crusades and televised healing sessions.

This is not the first time the controversial cleric has found himself in the news for the wrong reasons. In 2018, Magaya caused public outrage after claiming he had discovered a cure for HIV and cancer. He later retracted the claim and apologised after pressure from the Ministry of Health.

Although police are yet to provide full details on the number of complainants or the exact timeline of the alleged offences.
