Nicki Minaj’s Comment On Nigeria Triggers Invitation From US UN Mission
By Benjamin Abioye
The United States ambassador to the United Nations, Mike Waltz, has invited rapper Nicki Minaj for a conversation about what he described as “religious persecution in Nigeria”.
This came after U.S. President Donald Trump announced he would list Nigeria again as a “country of particular concern”. His statement caused many reactions, including from Mr Waltz.
Mr Trump claimed that there is a “Christian genocide” happening in Nigeria and blamed radical Islamist groups for the attacks. He also said he would tell the House appropriations committee to look into the situation.
Nicki Minaj reacted online by thanking God for the religious freedom she enjoys in the United States. She made it clear that nobody should suffer because of their faith. She also encouraged people to stay alert about rising religious conflicts around the world and pray for those who are affected.
“No group should ever be persecuted for practising their religion. We don’t have to share the same beliefs to respect each other,” part of her message read.
In response, Mr Waltz praised her for speaking up for Christians. He wrote, “@NICKIMINAJ, thank you for using your platform to speak out in defence of the Christians being persecuted in Nigeria.”
He added, “We cannot allow this to continue. Every brother and sister of Christ must band together and say, ‘Enough!’”
Mr Waltz then asked Nicki Minaj to visit him for more talks. According to him, “If you ever find yourself in New York, come by the US Embassy to the United Nations. I would love to speak with you more about what our administration is doing to protect Christians’ freedoms worldwide.”
Recently, Mr Trump also asked the U.S. Department of War to get ready for “possible action” against Islamic terrorists in Nigeria.
