Panic As Chad Shuts Border With Nigeria Over Security Threat
By Benjamin Abioye
The government of Chad has shut its border with Nigeria because of rising security worries and reports that militants might try to enter from Northern Nigeria.
Military officials in N’Djamena said on Monday that President Mahamat Idriss Déby Itno gave the order for troops to fully secure the border after receiving information that armed groups planned to cross into the country.
According to regional security analyst Zagazola Makama, Chadian forces have moved to major border areas with armoured vehicles and air support to block any possible movement.
“Chadian troops and armoured vehicles have been deployed to critical routes from Nigeria, and all units are now at full readiness,” Makama said.
President Déby also warned enemies and foreign actors against trying to enter Chad. He stated that “no armed group or foreign force will be allowed to enter Chadian soil under any disguise.”
There has also been tension in the region over claims that American forces may be repositioning troops in parts of West Africa. Although the United States has not released an official statement, the rumour has caused concern among some West African countries.
Security analysts say Chad’s move is meant to prevent trouble from spreading into its territory, especially as the Lake Chad Basin is seeing more militant activities and political changes in nearby countries like Niger and Burkina Faso.
With the border now closed, movement between Chad and Nigeria is temporarily stopped. Traders and people who travel between both countries have been told to wait for more instructions from Chadian authorities.
