Anambra: Chioma, AAC Candidate Divides Opinions Over Age And Competence
By Benjamin Abioye
A debate has erupted on social media after an X user, @GuyMr0, questioned why supporters of the Labour Party (LP), popularly known as Obidients, are backing a 64-year-old governorship candidate in Anambra State instead of 33-year-old Chioma Ifemeludike of the African Action Congress (AAC), who is also seeking the governorship seat in the state.
He wrote, “Chioma is 33, young and educated, but Obidients are rallying behind a 64 year old for the Governorship race in Anambra State. The same group of idiots will cyber-bully you tomorrow for voting old orders into power.”
In a follow-up post on his page, he insisted young candidates deserve more support, describing Obidients as contradictory in their political demands.
The post triggered a flood of responses, with users sharply divided on whether age or competence should be the most important factor in political leadership.
Responding, @offlinemademan said the matter once again shows inconsistency among some political supporters, noting, “The Obidients can’t deceive us again with the idea that we need a youth president like they did in 2023.”
User @iam_somTE mocked the original poster, writing, “Final score; 6/100. Remarks: CARRY OVER.”
Another user, @chigozthegreat, countered the argument, saying, “But you rallied round an older Tinubu over a younger Obi.”
Similarly, @Aech_V commented, “They only complain about age when it affects them. Set a standard and do what you say.”
Challenging the poster’s stance, @sanjos_brand asked, “What is the age of your god & president?”
User @morden_oracle fired back, saying, “U rally behind her na. Abi dem cut ur neck??”
For @Onyekachi_20, the focus should be on capacity, not age. He wrote, “Not just age that matters… Competence, Character, Integrity.”
Another respondent, @Nwanne9ja, questioned Chioma’s readiness, saying, “Make we leave technocrat for girl wey de twerk on social media?”
On his part, @irowode stated, “So the only criteria for electing someone to power is age according to your deluded mind?”
Also joining the debate, @Mazi_Chigbogu stressed competence, saying, “Obidents are not just concerned about your age but are you competent enough?”
Similarly, @Mindwin__ argued, “It’s not just about age, if it is, the Obidient would have rallied behind Sowore in the 2023 general election.”
Another user, @kokodesigner042, defended the 64-year-old candidate, saying, “We are against the one we don’t know his age, or anything about him or his upbringing.”
From a different angle, @MichaelAmobi1 accused the poster of bias, saying, “You have no moral justification to interfere in Anambra.”
Joining others in challenging the logic, @mrlegacy21 asked, “How old is the governor of your state?”
Meanwhile, @comingtodinner added, “If you could vote in 95 years old to presently rule Nigeria… 64 is a baby.”
Some, however, supported the argument for a younger candidate, with @Tochi_of_Enugu urging for civility, “You could have passed your information without insulting people.”
A few commenters dismissed Chioma’s chances entirely, with @itumasunny2496 saying, “That Chioma is not a serious contestant… she is just doing what she is doing for social media relevance.”
Others argued that reform demands consistency, with @Frankiekush47 saying, “If we are to go by your logic, any young person, irrespective of background or capacity… should be voted.”
Despite the backlash, @GuyMr0 maintained his stance, saying, “Attack me? Lol. Na me go attack them.”
The online reactions highlight growing political tensions ahead of the Anambra governorship election, as debates around youth leadership, competence and political credibility continue to shape public discussion.
