The Edo State Police Command has arrested one Chioma Success Adaniken for allegedly staging her own kidnapping and collecting a ransom of about ₦5 million from her husband.

ASP Eno Ikoedem, Deputy Police Public Relations Officer (DPPRO), confirmed the arrest in a statement issued on Monday night, explaining that it followed a report lodged by the suspect’s husband, Paul Adaniken, at the New Etete Police Division in Benin City.

According to the police, on October 27, 2025, Paul Adaniken reported that he left his wife, Chioma Success Ezebie, and their 3-year-old son, Andrea Ojiezelabor, at home before going to his shop. Later that day, he received a call from an unknown person who claimed that his wife, Chioma and son had been kidnapped and demanded a ransom of ₦5 million for their release.

Upon receiving the complaint, detectives from the New Etete Division swung into action, combining covert and overt investigative strategies. The DPPRO stated that the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit also launched full-scale cyber analysis and intelligence-led operations, which led to a major breakthrough.

The investigation revealed that the victim’s cousin, Osita Godfrey, who was initially believed to be assisting the police with information, was complicit in the crime. His confessional statement led to the arrest of the supposed victim, Chioma Success Adaniken, who conspired with her accomplices to fake her own kidnap in order to extort money from her husband.

Another suspect, Martins Chidozie, aged 23, was also arrested in connection with the crime. The suspects have reportedly made useful confessional statements, and the ₦5 million ransom has been recovered. The case has since been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for further investigation and prosecution.

The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Command, CP Monday Agbonika, commended officers of the New Etete Division for their swift and tactical response, which exposed what he described as a “deceitful act.”

He further warned residents to desist from actions capable of undermining public peace, stressing that the Command remains committed to deploying intelligence and technology-driven strategies to combat crime in all forms across Edo State.
