Drama In Anambra As YPP Expels Rep Over Pro-Soludo Speech
By Benjamin Abioye
The Young Progressives Party has removed Hon. Peter Uzokwe from the party. He represents Nnewi North, Nnewi South, and Ekwusigo in the House of Representatives. The party said he was expelled because he worked against the party and behaved wrongly.
The decision was made on Monday after the party leaders held an emergency meeting in Abuja. The party said a video came out where Uzokwe openly supported the All Progressives Grand Alliance and Governor Chukwuma Soludo ahead of the November 8 Anambra governorship election.
In the video, Uzokwe spoke to people and announced that he was no longer supporting the YPP candidate. He said, “YPP is not contesting any election. Did you hear me? I am the leader of YPP, and my supporters are here. In my constituency, I have told them to collapse it for His Excellency Chukwuma Soludo.”
He also said the party had no interest in the election. “We are not contesting any election. Even if we contest any, it has to be for Anambra North. So, YPP is not contesting. Only APGA and Soludo are running for this election. I will be home till after the election when His Excellency (Soludo) is returned to office,” he added.
YPP leaders reacted strongly and said Uzokwe’s words were false and harmful to the party. They said his actions disrespected the party’s rules.
The party spokesperson said, “The National Working Committee ratified the immediate expulsion of Hon. Peter Uzokwe… for gross misconduct… after several petitions and video evidence of anti-party activities.”
The party also rejected Uzokwe’s claim that he is the leader of the YPP. They said that position has been empty since the death of Senator Ifeanyi Ubah.
“The Party categorically refutes his false claim of being the leader of the YPP. At no time did the Party ratify or appoint him as its leader,” the statement said.
The party accused Uzokwe of trying to mislead people by going to an APGA rally and saying YPP had no candidate.
“Uzokwe’s appearance at an APGA rally, where he falsely declared that YPP has no candidate… is an act of desperation,” the party said. They called his behaviour “a deliberate attempt to deceive the public and destabilise the party.”
The party asked members to ignore Uzokwe and remain loyal. “His conduct is not only a violation of the party’s constitution but also an affront to collective discipline,” they said.
The YPP added it is still preparing for the November 8 election and has a candidate who will contest against Governor Soludo.
Uzokwe’s removal is the first big punishment from the party since Senator Ubah died in 2024. The party said it wants to bring back unity and discipline ahead of the election.
“The YPP remains committed to its founding ideals and will not tolerate acts capable of undermining its integrity,” the statement said.
