Gernot Rohr Drops Bold Verdict Ahead Of Nigeria Vs Gabon Playoff
By Benjamin Abioye
Benin Republic coach, Gernot Rohr, has backed Nigeria’s Super Eagles to win their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon next week. He believes the Nigerian team has enough strength and team spirit to finish the job.
Rohr was Nigeria’s coach from 2016 to 2021. He led the Super Eagles to the 2018 World Cup and took them to the semi-finals of AFCON in 2019. He now says the current squad can beat the Panthers of Gabon if they stay united and focused.
While speaking, Rohr said, “Aubameyang was a young player at that time (2012), and their captain, Bruno Ecuele Manga, is still there. But I think Nigeria has better players. If they play collectively like they did against Benin, I think they can beat Gabon.”
The German coach also believes Nigeria will win again and qualify for the FIFA Confederation Playoff after defeating DR Congo in the CAF playoff final.
Nigeria will face Gabon at El Barid Stadium in Rabat on Thursday, November 13. The winner will later play either Cameroon or DR Congo in the final stage to fight for a place in the FIFA Confederation Playoff.
The FIFA playoff will provide two more tickets for the 2026 World Cup, which will take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.
In the meantime, Gabon coach Thierry Mouyouma is ready to name his 25-man squad on Thursday. The team is expected to feature top stars like captain Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Mario Lemina, and Denis Bouanga.
Gabon will begin training in Rabat on Sunday as they prepare for their big game against Nigeria.
