A 34-year-old married man, Javed Inamdar, has been sentenced to 21 months in prison for groping a 12-year-old girl during a British Airways flight from Mumbai to London Heathrow.

According to Mail Online, the shocking incident occurred on December 14, 2023, when Inamdar repeatedly stroked the girl’s hand to “test the waters” before proceeding to assault her while she slept.

The young girl woke up in tears, screaming, “Get the f** away from me!”* and immediately alerted the cabin crew.

When confronted, Inamdar claimed he “may have confused the young girl with his wife.” However, jurors at Isleworth Crown Court found him guilty of one count of assaulting a girl under 13 by touching.

During the court proceedings, the father of two who appeared with the help of a Hindi interpreter broke down in tears as the verdict was delivered.

His lawyer, Lee Sergent, told the court that Inamdar was a foreign national from Mumbai with no legal status in the UK, adding that his employers had provided housing for him while he was on conditional bail. Sergent pleaded for leniency, saying his client had been unable to see his wife and children and would return to India immediately if given a suspended sentence.

But the presiding judge, Simon Davis, condemned Inamdar’s actions, describing them as “outrageous.”

“You thought you had the opportunity to assault her,” the judge said. “You tested the waters by brushing her hand. That was an outrageous thing to do. This country will protect people like this young girl, especially at that young age.”

Judge Davis, however, noted that Inamdar’s prolonged stay in the UK away from his family was a factor in slightly reducing the sentence.

Witnesses onboard the flight recounted the terrifying moment the incident unfolded. One passenger said she heard the girl screaming, “Stop touching me!” while another described how the victim was visibly shaken and crying.

British Airways cabin manager Rebecca Rooney also testified that the young girl was “visibly distressed,” hugging herself and trembling as she explained that the man beside her had put his hand under her jumper and touched her inappropriately.

Upon landing at Heathrow, police arrested Inamdar, who later told officers he had been “in a deep sleep” and couldn’t remember the incident.

Despite his claims, the court found him guilty, and he was sentenced to 21 months in jail.
