Sowore Has No NYSC Certificate — Police
The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, has said that former presidential candidate and activist, Omoyele Sowore, does not have a National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) certificate.
Jimoh made the statement during a television interview on Wednesday. He claimed the activist did not complete the compulsory national service program.
He said, “I want to make it abundantly clear that Sowore doesn’t have a NYSC certificate because of punitive reasons. He was posted to Adamawa, and he was evasive. He never did his service.”
Jimoh questioned why someone he says did not finish NYSC would try to cause unrest in Lagos.
“So such a person that is not even qualified to bear the NYSC certificate of our great country, Nigeria, will now be coming out to disturb the peace of Lagos? We will not allow it,” he stated.
The police chief defended his decision to declare Sowore wanted, saying it was legal and necessary to stop a planned protest.
According to him, he acted within his powers to protect lives and property.
“I have the right to declare him wanted. Any person who says I don’t have such a right should go to court,” he insisted.
Jimoh added that his action followed security intelligence and social media posts allegedly made by Sowore about plans to block the Third Mainland Bridge.
He explained, “When he posted something on his 𝕏 handle, and it’s there for people to verify, that he had just taken a bath in Abuja, and the next point is Lagos to block the Third Mainland Bridge, we were well prepared.”
The commissioner said police officers secured key parts of Lagos and arrested 13 people linked to the planned protest. He also revealed that a vehicle containing loudspeakers and a generator meant for the demonstration was seized.
“We ensured that we made alternative arrangements for people to use. Our duty is to prevent crime before it occurs,” he said.
Jimoh denied claims that he acted on orders from the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun.
“The IGP, I say without any doubt, has not given such an order, not to me, not to any police institution across the country. The reports claiming otherwise are mischievous,” he clarified.
He stressed that the operation was proactive policing aimed at preventing disorder and protecting public activities in Lagos.
