FIFA Release Nominees For 2021 The Best Goalkeeper

FIFA have confirmed the three nominees for The Best FIFA Men’s Goalkeeper award, with Gianluigi Donnarumma set to go head-to-head with Edouard Mendy and Manuel Neuer.

An international jury, made up of managers, international captains and a specialist journalist from each territory, will consider each goalkeeper’s achievements over the 2020/21 season before crowning a winner on January 17.

Neuer is the reigning champion, having received the award in 2020, and he will be hopeful of taking the prize home once again after another outstanding year in which his Bayern Munich side romped to Bundesliga glory.

However, Donnarumma may be an early favourite after leading Italy to European Championship glory in the summer.

The 22-year-old, who left AC Milan for Paris Saint-Germain soon after, was named the player of the tournament and also took home France Football’s Yachin Trophy, designed to honour the best goalkeeper of each calendar year.

Finally, Chelsea stopper Mendy, whom many felt deserved to be nominated for the Ballon d’Or alongside Donnarumma, is also in with a shot at winning.

The Senegal international has been outstanding since his switch to Chelsea in 2020 and set records on the Blues’ run to Champions League glory.

FIFA are in the process of announcing the shortlists for all The Best awards, beginning with the unveiling of the Puskas Award finalists on Tuesday.

Next up will be the nominees for The Best Men’s and Women’s Coaches on Thursday, before The Best Men’s and Women’s Player nominees will be revealed on Friday.
