The Augustine Eguavoen managed Super Eagles of Nigeria were in action on Wednesday in their final game Group D match at the AFCON 2021 against Guinea-Bissau at the Stade Roumde Adjia and they were yet again convincing as they recreated history.

Eguavoen’s side were at their sparkling best despite majority of the starters being left out of the squad to get a break ahead of the real test of time in the knockouts.

Nigeria made it three wins from three games played, thus recording a total of six goals scored and just one goal conceded, with all nine possible points accrued to see off the group stage in grand style.

Sadiq Umar gave Nigeria the breakthrough in the 56th minute after the first 45 minutes ended goalless. Captain and leader William Troost-Ekong was able to double the lead in the 75th minute after a brilliant piece of individual brilliance from Moses Simon, whose effort struck the crossbar and created an opening for the goal.

This result meant Nigeria have now won 12 of their last 14 games at the Africa Cup of Nations including all three of this year’s edition. It’s the first time since 2006 that they have won each of their opening three matches of the edition.

Nigeria will be looking to build on this momentum going into their subsequent games having being tipped as one of the favourites and strong contenders this year.

Augustine Eguavoen’s masterpiece has led Nigeria to repeated success as he became the only coach to record three wins in three group games for the Super Eagles twice, after initially achieving that feat in the 2006 AFCON. It was indeed a memorable night for the three-time AFCON champions who are hoping to make history in this year’s edition of the most glamorous showpiece in Africa.
