Plans by the Oluwo of Iwo, Oba Abdulrasheed Akanbi for marriage to a Kano princess were on Friday stirring controversy after a demand to Governor Gboyega Oyetola of Osun State for financial support leaked out.

An official of the palace had written to the governor in a letter dated February 8, 2022 intimating him of the monarch’s plan to marry a Fulani princess from the Kano Royal family. No date was given for the impending marriage.

However, the author writing on the letterheaded paper of the monarch had intimated the governor of the importance of the participation of the governor given what he said as the significance of the marriage between the two traditional houses.

“I wish to remind your Excellency that this kind of royal wedding within two notable traditional institutions in Nigeria will require huge expenses, which necessitate support of state government financially even logistically.

“Moreover, the estimated amount for the event is above (N20,000,000.00) Twenty Million Naira.”

The leakage of the letter was on Friday morning stirring controversy on social media as twitter users were wondering where the letter went to the public space.

GreenWhiteGreen GWG reports that the letter was acknowledged received in the office of the Special Adviser, Ministry of local government and chieftaincy affairs.

The colourful monarch was before now married to the flashy Jamaican born Canadian, Chanel Chin, the daughter of a reggae musician. The marriage which produced a son, Oduduwa came to an end in December 2019 amid acrimony. The monarch and his ex-olori have since then repeatedly thrown shades at one another.

The leaked letter on twitter received several reactions.

The Oluwo is yet to react to the leakage of the letter on his envisaged marriage to the Kano princess. Neither has he also formally confirmed the marriage plans beyond the leaked letter.
