Sebastien Haller Beats Salah, Mane Goal Records As Ajax Hold Benfica
By Eze Dike
Ivory Coast international Sebastien Haller made history in the UEFA Champions League as he became the highest scoring African in a single European tournament.
The 27-year-old striker had a bittersweet performance on the night as he scored on both ends on the pitch, first levelling for the opponents with an own goal then putting his side back in front with a well timed finish into an empty net. His goal on the night is his 11th in the Champions League as he is currently the highest goal scorer this season as Ajax played out to a 2-2 draw against a resilient Benfica.
And with that goal, Sebastien Haller now has the highest goals in a single UEFA Champions League campaign for an African player with 11 goals (and counting), breaking the record initially held by Liverpool duo Sadio Mane and Mo Salah who both scored 10 goals in the 2017-2018 season.
A massive achievement for the brilliant sharpshooter as he places himself in the history books. Haller has been outstanding all through the season scoring 16 goals and registering six assists in 20 appearances in the Dutch Eridivise for Ajax, with a total of 29 goals in all competitions so far.
His 10-goal mark in the group stage matched the record for most goals scored in the Champions League group stages which he shares alongside Cristiano Ronaldo. And despite having a mediocre outing at the Africa Cup of Nations with the Elephants, Sebastien Haller looks to go on and lead Ajax to a better-placed finish than they achieved in 2019 when they got to the Semifinal.
