Harry Kane Sets New Record As England Beat Switzerland 2-1
By Eze Dike
England kicked off their international campaign for 2022 with a win at Wembley, beating Switzerland from a goal down to win 2-1 just as Henry Kane set a new international goals record.
Gareth Southgate’s side who lost the Euro 2020 bitterly on penalties to Italy in the summer, were keen on starting the World Cup year on a winning note and they did that by a one-goal margin.
The hosts started off brightly as they forced their opponents to soak up all the pressure inside the first 20 minutes. But a smart game plan from Switzerland paid off just before the half-hour mark as they took the lead through Breel Embolo who scored through a resounding header. England constantly pushed for an equaliser and eventually got it with half time looming when Luke Shaw smashed in a shot after he was setup by Conor Gallagher who made his first international start.
However, the Three Lions found it difficult to break through the Swiss defence and they had to force the winner from the penalty spot after a handball inside the box was confirmed by VAR. Captain and leader for the English stepped up to slot in the winning goal as England triumphed 2-1 winners.
With that goal by England against Switzerland from the spot, Harry Kane scored his 49th international goal for his country as they now look forward to their next game against Ivory Coast. Here are key facts from the game as England beat Switzerland 2-1;
• Harry Kane has now scored 49 goals for England (level with Bobby Charlton) to become his country’s 2nd leading all-time goalscorer, only Wayne Rooney (53) has scored more for the Three Lions.
• Luke Shaw has been directly involved in six goals in his last eight appearances for England (2 goals, 4 assists), with both of his goals for the Three Lions coming at Wembley.
• England have gone unbeaten in each of their last 21 matches in all competitions (W17 D4), the outright longest streak in the Three Lions history.
