Despite Harsh Times In Imo Araraume Deflates Defection Rumours To Labour

Senator Ifeanyi Araraume has disclaimed reports of his imminent defection from the All Progressives Congress (APC) to the Labour Party (LP) describing the reports as fallacious.

Araraume who is one of the leaders of the APC in Imo State made the assertion in a statement issued on his behalf by Stanley Nzekwe.

GWG reports that the reports of a possible defection by Araraume are against the background of discontent between him and his one time ally Governor Hope Uzodimma with whom they staged the joint protest that aborted the Rochas Okorocha succession plan to his son-in-law.

However, the advent of Uzodimma as governor has not been accommodating to Araraume whose bid for a vacant Senate seat a year ago was roughly opposed by the governor and the party machine under him.

There were also mutterings that Araraume’s appointment as chairman of the board of the defunct Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation, NNPC was torpedoed by agents of the Uzodimma government. The appointment was eventually passed on to Senator Margery Okadigbo.   

The harsh political environment had fed rumours that Araraume had defection plans to several parties with Labour being the latest.

However, the Senator deflated the defection rumours in the statement saying he was not going to Labour or anywhere else, at least for the moment.

“I’m still a member of APC and have no reason to leave my party now,” he said.

GWG reports that Araraume, a two-term senator represented Imo north senatorial district between 2999 and 2007 and had following that made repeated attempts for the governorship.

While avowing his loyalty at the moment to the APC, he said that he would always make his political decisions known to the public.
