Lagos and France Sign E-Sports Agreement
The Lagos State Government and the French Government have signed a bilateral agreement that will lay the groundwork for the development of e-sports in Nigeria.
Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos State and Mrs. Emmanuelle Blatmann, French Ambassador to Nigeria, signed the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on e-sports at Lagos House, Marina.
The agreement will allow professional e-sports players in Lagos to compete in a real-time online community against players from all over the world for fortunes in the multibillion-dollar industry.
The French partners would deliver a high-quality online video gaming infrastructure in the bilateral agreement, allowing Lagos players to transition from casual to competitive players in their games of choice across online leagues.
Video Games
E-sports are organized competitive video games played in real time and watched by millions of people worldwide.
In Nigeria, there are an estimated 42 million e-sports players, with Lagos boasting a growing population of casual and competitive video game players who invest resources to compete online.
Sanwo-Olu stated that the MoU would allow the youth, who were the main players, to earn legitimate income from online gaming while also creating new avenues for youth engagement.
He stated that the signing of the MoU marks the start of another long-term, mutually beneficial relationship between Lagos and France.
According to him, the government is thrilled to be laying the groundwork for the growth of the e-sports industry and to be the first city in this part of Africa to do so.
”We are building something new, fresh and organic which will grow and uplift our youths in the IT world.
”This is the essence of this collaboration and the time is right to give our young people a new lease of life in the e-sports industry.
”Our enthusiasm is raised because, aside from the money to be earned from the industry, there would be skills and knowledge to be shared and transferred among our citizens taking part in the online sports.
”Technology, innovation and creativity are parts of things we are committing great investment into, in order to improve youth engagement.
”It is our belief that all the players will get to see the benefit of having this partnership between the two governments,” he said. NAN
