As one ages, it becomes increasingly important to pay attention to a variety of factors, including one’s own body. Food aids in the maintenance and growth of life; conversely, when we do not eat healthy foods, the quality and growth of life suffer.

As you reach adulthood, it’s important to make deliberate and positive lifestyle changes. Some nutritionists have identified ten foods that people over the age of 40 should avoid.

According to Nigerian nutritionist James Oloyede, people over the age of 40 should take their diet seriously and be intentional about what they eat.

1. Refined Carbohydrates

According to Oleyede, carbohydrates are foods with a high glycemic index that raise blood sugar levels in consumers.

“By this, we mean foods like pasta, pancakes, doughnuts, cookies, and so on.” Even in some countries, the rule is to limit consumption of white bread because it has a high glycemic index and rapidly raises blood sugar.

These have also been linked to heart disease, weight gain, and diabetes, among other things,” the nutritionist explained.

Oyedele also warns people over 40 who still eat a processed diet that they are at risk of developing acne, also known as blackheads or pimples.

“If it cannot be completely eliminated, it should be greatly reduced. It should be a once-in-a-blue-moon food, not incorporated into the daily diet,” he adds.

Another nutritionist, Olusola Malomo, agrees with Oloyede, saying that “white bread and pastas, artificial sweeteners, foods containing monosodium glutamate, saturated fats, and cholesterol should be avoided.”

2. Processed Meat

Every processed meat, such as sausages, ham, and hot dogs, contains unhealthy fat that dehydrates the body and promotes the early onset of wrinkles.

“It can also cause inflammation associated with arthritis in old age,” Oloyede adds. Arthritis develops as one grows older. When a preservative agent is broken down in the body, it produces nitrosamine chemicals, which have been shown to cause cancer if levels are exceeded. You never know (the amount of chemicals in the product), it could be an accident or deliberate, and individual tolerance varies, so it is best to avoid things like that by the time you are 40 or older.”

3. Fast Foods

Oloyede observes that fast foods are unsuitable for people over the age of 40. He explains that fast foods contain a variety of ingredients in varying amounts, some of which are unhealthy.

He also claims that they contain sugar, fats, nitrites, and sodium, all of which are harmful to one’s health.

4. Fruit Juice Intake

Oloyede and Malomo both agree that those in their 40s and above should avoid drinking fruit juice.

According to Oloyede, regardless of the ingredients and benefits advertised, people in this age group should avoid it.

“It is more fructose and contains a lot of sugar, for those who have a tendency to develop diabetes; that can accentuate it in the true sense of it,” he adds.

Furthermore, because it is a fruit juice, the fibre has been removed, and fibre aids digestion, is laxative in nature, and is necessary in the bowel. “The sugar and other added preservatives are also reasons to be cautious,” Oloyede adds.

5. Intake of Alcohol

Oloyede goes on to say that it should be avoided entirely or drastically reduced. They explain that alcohol consumption interferes with proper hydration in the body. “It sucks out water from various parts of the body, affecting its elasticity, and the end result is wrinkles all over the individual’s body,” they write.

6. Fatty Foods

Though eating chicken is encouraged, people in this category are advised to remove the skin before eating it, especially if it is fried. This would reduce cholesterol consumption, which leads to artery and heart disease.

7. Avoid Sugar

As one advances in age, the nutritionist advises that one cuts down on sugar intake, especially processed sugar.

“When you’re above 40, there is nothing you should be doing with sugar anymore. Sugar itself causes inflammation which inhibits having a clear and beautiful skin because it damages elastin which promotes elasticity of the skin, bringing about wrinkles early in life,” Oloyede adds.

8. Don’t Take Energy Drinks

Energy drinks contain a lot of caffeine, high sodium among other components which are harmful to health. Its accumulation in the body system over time forms toxins and when the body can no longer handle it, becomes harmful and this can reduce the lifespan of the individual.

9. Baked Foods

Baked foods, such as cakes, are high in sugar and fat and should not be consumed to promote longevity.

10. Milk

It is necessary to reduce the amount of saturated fat milk consumed by those above 40 years. If this is not done, such people will have a lot of fat in their system, as well as digestive issues and constant diarrhea.

11. Eggs

To stay healthy, the quantity of eggs to be consumed by those above 40 years should be reduced.

Oloyede advocates a return to a regional diet rich in natural and unprocessed foods, fruits and vegetables, and protein-rich foods.
