Lagos Building Collapse: Four People Die, One Rescued
Four people, two men and two women, have been confirmed dead after the three-storey building collapsed in Mushin, Lagos, on Friday.
A woman was rescued from the collapsed building at 2/4 Oye Sonuga Street, Plamgrove, Mushin.
The structure, which was said to be 40 years old, was used as a club house.
Some people, however, reported seeing signs of an impending crisis earlier in the week, with part of the cracking.
Four persons, two males and two females, have been confirmed dead in the three-storey building that collapsed on Friday in Mushin, Lagos.
Some neighbours said they were not surprised the building was demolished because there were obvious signs that it was unfit for human habitation.
Many people wondered why their concerns had not been escalated to the appropriate authorities prior to the disaster.
Two teenagers claimed that their aunt and uncle, along with their 10-month-old baby, had been rescued and were being treated at a hospital.
National Emergency Maintenance Agency (NEMA) South West Zonal Coordinator, Mr Ibrahim Farinloye, told The Nation that two males and two females died, while one person was rescued in the building collapse.
He said people initially NEMA team that three persons were trapped in the building but the agency was able to bring out four dead bodies and rescued one.
Luqman Muritala, a neighbour, confirmed that four persons were brought out dead, while one was rescued.
According to him, the additional of ten more rooms might be the reason for the collapse.
“The building was already distressed before the owners added more ten rooms. They just completed the ten rooms last week. This could have led to the collapse,” he said.
Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Permanent Secretary Oluwafemi Oke-Osanyitolu said the agency received a distress call around 11:45am and quickly dispatch two of their teams to the scene.
He stated that one of the challenges faced by the rescued team was crowd control but were able to surmount it with the help of the policemen and some neighbours.
Distressed buildings beside the collapsed building were demolish in the process of rescue operations.
Residents in the two houses were given time to evacuate their belongings before the buildings were brought down
Meanwhile, the Lagos State Government, said it was investigating the partial collapse of an old building.
Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Omotayo Bamgbose-Martins, who visited the scene, directed that the adjoining building be pulled down immediately to forestall further collapse and for safety reasons.
A statement by the Deputy Director, Public Affairs Mukaila Sanusi, said efforts are on to rescue those who might have been trapped in the rubble.
“The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) and the Lagos State Materials Testing Laboratory have been directed to unravel the cause of the collapse. The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency is leading the rescue operations,” Sanusi said. The Nation
