Corpse Of Bayelsa Football Star Who Drowned After Saving Five Victims Recovered

The corpse of Earnest Peremobowei, a footballer who drowned in Yenebelebiri community of Yenagoa Local Government Area, Bayelsa State has been recovered and deposited in the mortuary of the Federal Medical Centre, Yenagoa.

He was said to have drowned after rescuing five other people from a sinking boat.

They were en route to Yenebelebiri when the boat capsized after colliding with the Yenagoa jetty barge.

The 31-year-old was the joint top scorer in this year’s Bayelsa Governor Football Tournament, also known as the Prosperity Cup, with nine goals.

Earnest Komboye, his sibling, confirmed the incident and said he died of exhaustion after saving five people on the boat on Friday.
Komboye stated that they were attempting to cross over to the Yenebelebiri community to assess the extent of the flood’s devastation of their houses and farmlands when the incident occurred.

Meanwhile, the Prosperity Cup’s organisers, led by Director General Ono Akpe, have expressed their condolences to the late Peremobowei’s family.

Akpe, who recalled the late footballer’s skills and passion, having played for the Dreams Academy in the most recent state FA Cup finals, said the flood disaster had cost the state one of its brightest future stars.

“His exploits and bravery are exemplary,” he said. It’s unfortunate that he only saved five people before succumbing to the raging torrents. He was a true hero.”
