Church Member Fakes His Obituary To Avoid 3M Debt
Paul Oyewole, a 43-year-old, was remanded by an Ondo state magistrate court after he was charged with posting his fake obituary on social media in an effort to avoid paying a N3 million debt to a member of his church.
Vanguard reports that Oyewole allegedly got N3m from one Boyede Emmanuel under the pretense that he would repay the money in seven days.
According to Police Prosecutor Akao Moremi, after the accused clergyman failed to make his payment, he posted a fraudulent obituary on WhatsApp and issued a false bank alert to his creditor. He was also accused of intimidating the complainant by calling and threatening him, as well as acting in a way that would have disturbed the peace by stripping in front of the complainant’s home.
He was accused of having violated Sections 419, 86, and 125A(1) of the Criminal Code, Cap. 37, Volume 1, Laws of Ondo State of Nigeria, 2006.
The cleric entered a not guilty plea after having the allegations read to him. The police prosecutor requested a date so that he could present his case after informing the court that he would invite four witnesses to testify in the case.
The defendant’s attorney, Mrs. Queen Arokoyo, requested the most lenient bail conditions for her client.
Following the arraignment the defendant was given a N1 million bail with two reliable sureties each by the presiding magistrate, Mrs. Mosunmola Ikujuni. Ikujuni emphasized that both the original and a photocopy of the identification card must be enclosed, and one of the sureties must be a homeowner who resides in the jurisdiction. She then set a hearing date of February 13, 2023 for the case against the church member who is alleged to have posted a fake obituary to avoid a debt.
