S/Court Adjournment Is Technical Victory For Buhari Over Rebel Governors

The decision of the Supreme Court to adjourn the case instituted by the 10 state governments against the Federal Government challenging the implementation of the naira redesign to March 3 may be considered a technical victory for the key aims of the policy framed by the Muhammadu Buhari government.

GWG.ng reports that the adjournment leaves the country in a suspense over the continued use of the old N500 and N1,000 notes. While some state governments notably, the Kaduna and Ogun State governments have directed those doing business in their states to continue to use the old naira notes, the order as given by the governors is in direct conflict with the order of President Buhari who has declared the old notes as no more eligible as legal tender.

One of the key aims of the Buhari government in effecting the naira notes change is to stem the tide of vote buying which is normally effected through cash. Cash is also a means of transaction for corrupting electoral officers and others involved in elections.

As he exits office, Buhari it was gathered is working to etch his integrity after office through masterminding a fair election devoid of the notable malpractises that are masterminded using cash.

The policy has also helped to stem kidnapping, currency fluctuation and inflation with the availability of the lower denomination notes.

While Buhari has remained mum on the rebellion of several of his former disciples like Governor Nasir El-Rufai of Kaduna State in challenging his authority on the issue, the decision is likely to erode the authority of the governors driving for the continued use of the old naira notes as fewer people are likely to risk transacting on the old naira notes. The All Progressives Congress, APC which two days ago backed the governors against the president is also expected to be in a lurch on the issue.
