Nigerian businessman and bitcoin investor, Linus Williams Ifejika, popularly known as BLord, has been criticized by fans for offering a scholarship programme exclusively to people from his hometown, Ebenebe in Anambra state.

BLord announced the scholarship programme on his Instagram page, stating that he would be sponsoring people from his village who wished to write JAMB, NECO, WAEC, and other university entrance exams. He said he needed 50 to 100 people to apply, and that so far, only 10 beneficiaries had been chosen.

The scholarship will cover the cost of JAMB form, WAEC, or NECO, and will continue until the beneficiaries complete their studies. However, BLord stipulated that the scholarship is only available to those from Ebenebe and who intend to study at Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka.

Critics took to social media to condemn BLord for limiting the scholarship to his village, accusing him of tribalism. One fan wrote, “Which one is from your village, if you want to help people, please help. They must not come from your village.”

In response, BLord said, “Haven’t you heard that charity begins at home?”

Despite the backlash, some of BLord’s fans defended him, saying that he had the right to choose who to offer the scholarship to and that he was doing a good thing by supporting his community.

BLord is known for his philanthropic work, having previously donated food items and cash to those in need during the COVID-19 pandemic. He has also sponsored the education of several young people from his community, and donated to charities and orphanages.

It is unclear whether BLord will change his criteria for the scholarship programme following the criticism. However, his actions have sparked a debate on the role of philanthropy in society and whether it should be targeted or available to all.
